Quieter Trams For Australia 

SNC-Lavalin is one of the largest engineering design firms in the world. They are leaders in a wide range of industries, including mining, metallurgy, oil and gas, clean energy, and rolling stock here in Victoria.

The Problem

CAD models were not available for the existing bogeys ad would need to be produced in order to fit SNS-Lavalin's cross-bracing system to fit. In addition to this, allowances needed to be made to wear across the lifetime of the bogey to prevent interference problems down the track. 

The Solution

OnePointSix engaged our 3D scanning partners to capture a high detail scan of an existing bogey using laser and probe arm technology. The scan was brought into Solidworks by OnePointSix and was used to fit the cross-bracing structure in place and to model the interface geometry. wheel wear was simulated in Solidworks and the resulting clearances were assessed against required tolerances. 3D and 2D manufacturing drawings were output as per SNC-Lavalin's engineering standards. All work was carried out by OnePointSix staff placed on-site at SNC-Lavalin's Melbourne offices.

Enhanced Security For B-Class Trams

It is easy to think of trams in a purely mechanical sense. Methodical, repeatable transport workhorses operating around the clock to get us where we need to go. At the helm of every tram though, is a person with the needs to leave their post throughout the day. With the tight time pressures on Melbourne's tram network, it is important to have a fast, reliable method to secure the trams whenever a driver needs to leave the controls or change drivers. 

Enhanced Security For B-Class Trams

The Problem​

Yarra Trams were looking to replace the door lock units on their B-Class trams. It appeared that the mechanisms had reached the end of their usable life and were due for replacement. These units were no longer readily available as on OEM supplied part and Yarra trams looked locally to reproduce the units. 

The Solution

OnePointSix's expertise in sheet metal design and manufacturing made us the natural choice for Yarra Trams' B-Class door lock project. OntPointSix reverse engineered the existing locking system with a view to reproduce the unit s per the OEM design. During the reverse engineering process we identified problems with the original design that had led to the premature failure of the existing units. We took the opportunity presented by these problems to re-imagine the design as a whole. OnePointSix's design enhancements led to a more affordable, ore reliable, easier to assemble unit, that has been in trouble free operation on the entire B-Class fleet ever since.

In addition to improving the original design, OnePointSix managed manufacturing and supply for the entire project.

A Tram Weighs More Than 30 Rhinos

Who can forget that most relatable of yardsticks for tram weight that was ubiquitous throughout the tram network for so many years. Were still not certain how much a rhino weighs, but we do know that an uncontrolled tram rolling freely down Collins street is
something no-one wants to see.

 

The Problem

Melbourne is home to one of the world's greatest tram networks, but things still do go wrong and trams need to be towed. Just like the chain you connect to your trailer when towing with your car, a back up connection is necessary for trams in case of failure of the primary towing equipment. When you are towing something as heavy as a tram that back up system requires some serious engineering and a detailed approach to design and documentation.

 

The Solution

Yarra Trams turned to OnePointSix as a trusted design partner to assist in the custom development of the backup towing connection. OnePointSix designed a tow hitch based on the engineering requirements supplied by Yarra Trams and created 2D and 3D manufacturing documents.
